This one is for my strollerciser moms and dads or for anyone looking for some general guidelines for introducing "solid" food in the first 6-9 months.  Of course, all babies are different so as a Naturopath I take into consideration health history, birth story, pregnancy as well as the health of mom and dad in deciding how to introduce food into a baby's diet.  Family history of type-1 diabetes, celiac disease and ectopic conditions such as allergies, asthma and eczema can all change how foods should be introduced.  However, there are some general guidelines that can help you provide the best for your baby. Feeding Baby: General Guidelines

  • When possible, exclusively breastfeed until 6 months of age
  • Begin introducing solids at six months or when they show signs of being ready but not before 4 months of age.
  • Signs of readiness: they have good control of their head and neck; they can sit upright with support; they have lost their tongue thrust reflex; they can turn away from the breast or bottle; they can coordinate eyes, hands and mouth; their birth weight has doubled; They make chewing motions; The demand for more frequent milk/formula feeds has increased
  • Use organic food, if possible
  • Continue breast-feeding for as long as you are able to, combining solids with breast milk
  • Introduce one food at a time by giving 2-3 teaspoons for 3 days in a row.  Watch for reactions- diaper rash, skin rashes, runny nose, watery eyes or behavioral changes
  • Gradually increase the quantity given until baby is eating 2-3 tablespoons of food at each meal

When Baby is Between 6-9 Months:

  • Start by giving your baby a wide variety of colourful steamed fruit and vegetable purees every day.
  • Try to make your own baby food. The taste is better and it may be easier to transition to family foods. (We are offering a Baby Food Workshop, see below)
  • Variety is important, try not to get stuck on the same food
  • Don't be afraid to try foods with your baby that you are not fond of
  • Avoid honey and egg whites until age 1

Choose foods from the following:

Steamed prunes- fibre, iron, vitamin C, fluid, calcium

Bananas- potassium, iron, easy to chew

Cauliflower-iron, fibre

Pear sauce- Vitamin C, fibre, fruit sugar

Squash- fibre, carbohydrates, vitamin C and Vitamin A

Papaya- vitamin C

Fresh apricots- fruit sugar, fibre, liquid

Avocado- vitamin C, healthy fat, fibre, easy to chew

Cherries- fibre, iron, vitamin c, fluid

Blackberries- fibre, iron, vitamin c

Broccoli- iron, fibre, chlorophyll, potassium, calcium

Applesauce- fibre, fluid, fruit sugar

Sweet potato- carbohydrates, vitamin A, potassium

Steamed, dried apricots (sulfite free)- iron
